Ted Hall

Community plays such an important role across the Petticoat Lane area. Inclusion, togetherness, and celebration is a common sight across these streets. Few play a more important role in this local community than Ted Hall, who was voted a Local Hero by the Aldgate community in 2022. Former military man turned gardening whizz; Ted is engrained into the community of Petticoat Lane. Ahead of his 80th birthday in March 2024 (Happy belated birthday, Ted!), we sat down to learn more about his life in London and further afield…

Ted, tell us a little bit more about yourself

It’s quite hard to condense 80 years into a quick answer, but here goes! I’ve had three careers in my life, spending much of it in the British Army. I started out in London, charging across Hyde Park and firing salutes for The Queen as part of The Kings Troop Royal Artillery. Then in 1964, after three years with The Kings Troop, I passed the Commando Course and joined 95 Commando Light Regiment, Royal Artillery.

From here, I travelled all across the world! My first tour took me to Singapore where I trained as a parachutist. My second tour took me to the Far East but after injuring my left hand I had to retrain as an administrator. After 25 years of service in the British Army I retired and set off on my next adventure in London!

In 1984, I was appointed Beadle to The Worshipful Company of Skinners, an ancient Livery Company based in Dowgate Hill near Cannon Street Station. My job was to be the main contact for all 1,000 members, organising the events and celebrations that took place in Skinners’ Hall. I worked in this role until my retirement in 2009.

Following this, I decided to train as a qualified City of London Guide, welcoming visitors to the City of London and delivering tours of the local area. In 2012, I became Chair of The Petticoat Square Gardening Club, on the Podium of Middlesex Street, where my wife and I currently reside. The Gardening Club maintains the Podium Gardens on the estate for the benefit of 400 residents. We ensure it remains a pleasant and welcoming space for everyone.

Do you have a favourite memory of Petticoat Lane?

Apart from the time spent with The Gardening Club, I’d have to say roasted chestnuts on a Sunday morning! The smell reminds me of the stalls that used to be across the streets.

And do you have a favourite restaurant in the area?

My wife and I absolutely love Mumbai Square on Middlesex Street, it’s our favourite place to visit for a meal out. We both love the butterfly prawns as a starter, they’re delicious. I’d definitely recommend trying them out. Bon Appétit!
