Petticoat Lane: a plant-based paradise

Posted on: 16.01.2026

The Association of UK Dietitians describes a plant‑based diet as one “based on foods that come from plants with few to no ingredients that come from animals.” Using that definition, we’re proud to say we’ve got plant‑based dishes that could win over even the most committed carnivores. Whether you’re after indulgent pastries, a refined dining experience, or a reliable budget-friendly favourite, you’ll find it all down the Lane.

We could walk you through every single meat‑free option available on our streets – but you probably don’t have time for a full‑length novel today. So instead, we’ve rounded up a selection of the plant‑based spots you can enjoy right here in our patch.

If you’re in the mood for flawless plant-based pastries… Okja

Baking is a dairy heavy business, which makes Okja’s mastery of vegan certified pastries even more impressive. Their Toynbee Street bakery is the first international opening of this Cape Town brand (though you may recognise the name from their popular plant-based milks), and they’ve quickly gained a dedicated following from vegans and omnivores alike.

Menu highlights: chocolate hazelnut swirl, cheeze and pesto bun, peanut butter bomb.

If you’re in the mood for ‘a perfect vegan Scandinavian experience’… Dauns

Chef Rickard opened the world’s first fully vegan Scandi deli, cafe and bar on Wentworth Street in 2021, and however niche that may sound, there’s a huge appetite for it. Their delicious food and cosy vibe make it the perfect spot for a light lunch or ‘fika’ moment. They also regularly host vegan supper clubs, but stay alert because those tickets get snapped up.

Menu highlights: Tunnbrödsrulle (Swedish hot dog), Smorrebrod (open sandwiches), Kanelbulle (cinnamon bun).

If you’re in the mood for some Middle Eastern magic… Bubala

Bubala’s small plates menu is a masterclass in making plants the main event. Complemented by a select addition of Middle Eastern dairy products like halloumi and labneh, they’re making veg bigger, bolder and tastier than you’d ever believe. And take our advice: whilst their laffa bread is sublime, remember to leave room for mains.

Menu highlights: hummus with burnt butter, oyster mushroom skewers, sweetheart cabbage.

If you’re craving chicken… minus the chicken… 1947

If we didn’t know that 1947 was only serving 100% vegan and vegetarian dishes, we would never guess. Their curries are so creamy and their plant based alternatives so realistic that you might think you were eating a regular chicken korma. But no. By focusing on the wide range of vegan and vegetarian dishes already found in Indian cuisine, they have perfected these recipes to serve authentically flavourful food.

Menu highlights: palak paneer dosa, tofu masala, butter ‘chicken’.

If you’re in the mood for grab-and-go grub… Petticoat Lane’s weekday food market

Our weekday food market always offers plenty of great vegan and vegetarian options. There’s East African Street Food’s split pea stew and injera, Falafel Shack’s hearty falafel and hummus wraps, Taste of Egypt’s mezze box, Satay Street’s tofu and peanut rice bowl, and Damascus Gate’s halloumi wrap… Need we go on? Get yourself down there pronto and check out the options for yourself.
