Boulebar Spitalfields: award-winning hospitality
Posted on: 26.06.2025

Banish your outdated ideas that lawn games are reserved for the village square, because Boulebar are showing that it’s no coincidence their namesake game rhymes with ‘cool’.
Taking inspiration from sun-soaked Marseille parks and vibey Parisian cocktail bars, Boulebar Spitalfields is the kind of spot you’ll come back to time and time again. Here’s why:
THE GAME
You don’t need to quit your job and go all Escape to the Château to get a taste of the romantic French lifestyle – pétanque captures the dream you’re lusting after; simple to understand yet a challenge to master, low stakes fun yet fiercely competitive, and all enjoyed with a drink in hand. So maybe scratch that itch with a game or two before making any major life decisions.
We thought we’d try to explain the rules but we actually made ourselves more confused, so check out Boulebar’s guide instead (they also actually know what they’re talking about).
THE MENU
Having recently bagged a trophy at the 2025 Competitive Socialising Awards for their menu, you can rest assured you’ll be wined and dined to the highest standards of French hospitality.
Take a break from your game to slurp an oyster or nosh on some artisanal French cheese, slathered with jam on a fresh baguette.
These dishes are designed to be shared (think heaps of olives, pomme frites, and very generous helpings of cheese), making socialising around bites all the easier.
And let’s not forget about the drinks! We all know that French wine is top-tier, but have you tried their other tipples? Of course, there’s your biére and cidre, but also cocktails and mocktails for every fancy. If you want to go all out, have a sip of pastis – the traditional spirit of the game.
THE SPACE
We wouldn’t blame you for walking in and thinking “Where the heck have they hidden 10 courts in this place?”, but take a sharp left past the bar and get ready for your eyes to pop…

Because down the stairs you’ll find a full-sized pétanque arena with the courts, additional seating, tables to dine and watch the games from, and some very funky wall art.
In contrast to the first UK Boulebar in Southbank, Spitalfields is an “indoor oasis” to whisk you away from the daily drudgery. And it’s so much cheaper than mini break.
So, from just £13pp for a 90-minute game (or £10 to join the fortnightly Friday tournament), treat yourself to a good time. And if you really want to level up your game, you better get practicing these useful French phrases:
Ma boule est définitivement plus proche.
My boule is definitely closer.
Ton pied est sorti du cercle…
Your foot stepped out the circle…
L’équipe perdante paie les boissons x
Losing team buys the drinks x
Passe-moi le mètre ruban, tu t’y prends mal.
Pass me the tape measure, you’re doing it wrong.
Alors, quand est-ce qu’on revient?
So, when are we coming back ?
